I attended an anti-aging conference recently. The discussions were about natural and pharmaceutical ways to slow the aging process and extend the vitality/longevity of humans. There were 20 speakers from around the world. All 20 of these physicians and professors eventually discussed stem cells as a way to slow aging and speed healing.

What are stem cells and how can they help us live long, healthy lives? Are there natural products that can assist us as we age?

What are stem cells?
At conception, cells begin to divide into what will become a person. Along the way the cells “differentiate” – that is, they become different tissues. Some become the heart, others the brain and so on until the complete human is formed. These are called “embryonic” stem cells. Highly controversial experiments are being conducted with samples of these cells.

Once a person is formed, does the human body stop making stem cells? No, because stem cells are part of our miraculous healing process. We make stem cells every day of our life. These are different from embryonic stem cells because they actually replace other cells. You see, every cell in your body has a life span. When that cell dies it needs to be replaced. Stem cells made in your bone marrow and other places in your body follow a chemical trail back to the place where the cell dies and “differentiate” into the type of cell that died.

Aging can be defined as the process of cell death and cell replacement. Premature aging is when more cells die than you can replace in a single day. Chronic disease and disability often accompany premature aging, as you might imagine. Stem cells replace dead cells. So, the more stem cells you can make in a day, the slower you are aging, the more vital you may be, and the less likely you are to experience the chronic diseases associated with premature aging. All 20 of the experts at the anti-aging conference endorsed doing all we can to promote stem cell production by our own body.

Making stem cells
As I mentioned, we make stem cells every day. Dying cells release enzymes into your bloodstream. Your brain interprets the level of enzymes and sends an appropriate amount of Human growth hormone (HgH). When the HgH reaches the bone marrow or other stem cell “nursery,” it triggers the release of a number of stem cells that roughly correspond to the amount of HgH. The stem cells follow the chemical trail left by the enzymes of the dying cell. They follow the trail back to the space left by the dead cell and nestle into the tissues. Once there, they differentiate into the cell they replace – they literally become the exact type of cell they replaced.

Nutrients are required for making cells (including stem cells). If you are deficient in any critical nutrient at the moment you create stem cells, one of two things will happen:

  1. Your bone marrow will refuse the order to meet that quota of stem cells, causing premature aging, or
  2. The cells will be made, but without the nutrients critical for the health and longevity of the cell. When a deficient cell matures it becomes the target for inflammation and disease.

Cells need nutrients. Without all of the appropriate nutrients on board at all times, we will not be able to make as many healthy cells as we lose in a day. The disparity between how many cells we lose and how many we can replace is premature aging.

More stem cells
Nutrients serve as the foundation for stem cells. However, specific nutrients also stimulate the production of stem cells. At the anti-aging conference, six stem cell-stimulating nutrients were identified. Alzheimer’s Disease − Separating Facts From Myths

My own family has been touched by Alzheimer’s so it’s very important for me to help you separate the myths from the truth about AD. By having the facts you can better protect yourself against the onset of Alzheimer’s or help your loved ones who are already suffering from the disease.Myth: We see more people with Alzheimer’s disease because of media attention

Truth: The number of people with AD is increasing every year and the percentage of people with AD in North America is increasing, though the lifespan is getting shorter. The number of people with Alzheimer’s disease is increasing at an alarming rate. There is no cure. Currently, over 500 clinical trials are being conducted just to find a way to slow down the runaway epidemic of AD. Truth: AD is the accumulation of many years of damage to your brain, causing plaque to build up and nerves to tangle. AD affects about half of people age 85 and older. However, this is more a product of biological age than chronological age. In other words, AD has more to do with how well we are aging rather than how many days we cross off our calendar! Homocysteine: What is it ? And What is it Doing to Your Health ?

What is homocysteine?

Each one of your trillions of cells makes proteins. A useful tool in making proteins is an amino acid called homocysteine (HCY). Amino acids are building blocks of protein and fall into two categories: * Essential amino acids – these proteins are called “essential” because you need them to make other amino acids. * Non-essential amino acids – your body makes these proteins when it needs them. It uses essential amino acids as the source material for constructing non-essential amino acids. <P>

HCY works like dynamite to break essential amino acids into simpler, useable, non-essential amino acids. If everything works perfectly, HCY is neutralized once it completes its work. But if your body lacks the nutrients necessary to neutralize HCY, it can build up in your body, break free into your bloodstream, and damage your cells. Lock Out ‘the Bone Thief’

First, a look at just what osteoporosis is, and who it strikes. This “silent disease” has no outward symptoms: it gradually steals mass and strength from bones, leaving them porous and weakened. Its main targets? The hip, spine and wrist.The damage leaves victims vulnerable to falls and fractures, and that can lead to even more scary situations – including death. While “the bone thief” can attack people of any age and either gender,women and mature adults are most likely to be affected. Osteoporosis is not an inevitable part of aging, and it is a big deal.

One of the latest in a long line of studies about osteoporosis indicates that in people over age 60, any bone fracture dramatically boosts the risk of dying.

The Australian study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at more than 4,000 people over a period of almost 20 years, and found these dramatic results: * After even a minor bone break like a wrist fracture, the risk of death zoomed by 42% in women and 33% in men. * After a hip fracture, women were twice as likely to die than before, and men, three times as likely to die. * These jumps in death risk lingered for years: 5 years for all fractures, and up to 10 years after a hip fracture.

What brings on bone loss? Time steals bone from us all. Around age 30, bone (which is living tissue made of collagen protein and calcium phosphate, a mineral) reaches a peak of density and strength. After that, bone starts being lost at a faster rate than it’s created; the process really speeds up after menopause, and continues into postmenopause due to decreased levels of the hormone estrogen. People most at risk are small, thin-boned Caucasian and Asian women with a family history of osteoporosis, and their risk increases with age.

The bone-breaking risk goes up in general for people who smoke, don’t exercise, drink alcohol, take certain medications and don’t get enough calcium and Vitamin D.

Detection & Prevention.

Sadly, the first clue some people get about osteoporosis stealing their bones is a sudden fall that fractures a hip or makes a spinal vertebra collapse. At this stage, or before, during a wellness exam, a healthcare professional may order a bone mineral density (BMD) test. This painless test can detect the current stage of bone loss, or identify bone issues before they become a problem (“osteopenia” or low bone density can be a sign of osteoporosis to come). There are medications for osteoporosis, and several other everyday ways that everyone can help protect their precious bones.

Healthcare professionals recommend three main strategies to turn away the bone thief and help stay strong:

1. crank up the calcium. This mineral is vital to bones; if you don’t get enough over your lifetime, you’re leaving yourself wide open to bone theft. Since many people consume less than half the recommended amount of calcium, it’s important to take up the slack: eat foods like low-fat dairy products, dark green, leafy vegetables and calciumfortifi ed foods. In addition, these tips can help you stay upright and safe: * If needed, use a cane or walker for added stability. * Wear traction-soled shoes. * When sidewalks are slippery, walk on grass. * Tread carefully on polished fl oors that can be dangerously slick when wet. * Indoors, avoid walking in socks or slick-soled slippers. * Don’t use scatter rugs. All carpets and area rugs should either have skid-proof backing or be secured to the floor. * If possible, have handrails on both sides of stairways.

Prostate Cancer and PSA Screening: a Must Read

First, prostate cancer is not your typical cancer. It tends to spread slowly in the overwhelming majority of men afflicted. The insidious nature of prostate cancer means that if a man is diagnosed at age 60, it is very likely the disease will not progress for many years before causing any serious complications or risk to one’s life.Treatment options for prostate cancer are numerous and range from targeted chemotherapy or radiation to surgery to oral hormone therapy.

Which treatment is best is dependent on whether the cancer has spread outside of the prostate and the extent of the spread.

Symptoms can start at age 40 or earlier Lately, medical authorities are revisiting the two-decades-old question of prostate specific antigen (PSA) screening. Physicians routinely discuss PSA testing with men ages 40 and over as this is the age when men typically begin to notice symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Some physicians recommend PSA screening at an even earlier age, so don’t wait until you have symptoms. These symptoms may include more frequent urination, decreased urinary stream, trouble fully emptying the bladder, and/or nighttime awakening to urinate. Examination of the prostate entails a digital rectal exam to assess for the prostate’s size, contour, shape and to detect any nodular growths that may indicate an underlying cancer. Because digital rectal exam can assess only the surface of the prostate gland, PSA testing is often recommended by medical practitioners to complement the screening for cancer.

Long-term scientific trials have been undertaken to determine the benefits of PSA testing. The outcomes are mixed.

One recently completed study done in the United States confirmed that PSA testing did not lessen the overall death rate due to prostate cancer. Another European study involving 18,000 men had a slightly different outcome. This study concluded that there was some benefit in reducing overall death due to prostate cancer in men who were screened using PSA testing, compared to men who were not screened.

Unfortunately, prostate cancer is rather common. Many men will have this disease and be blissfully unaware, regardless of whether or not they took a PSA test. The decision to screen with the PSA test should be discussed with a trusted healthcare practitioner.

Lowering the risk of prostate cancer and prostate problems can be accomplished by eating a low saturated-fat diet, consuming fresh fruits and vegetables with plenty of antioxidants and appropriate supplemental products designed to facilitate proper prostate function.

Could B-12 Curb the Bipolar Epidemic ?

While this research is still underway, we do know that the number of people, young and old, being diagnosed with bipolar disorder (it used to be called manic-depression) continues to climb. Mental health experts estimate that some 5.7 million adults are affected by the highs and lows of this very serious problem. The trend is especially disturbing when you look at what’s happening with children under 18.

A research paper published in a psychiatric journal recently reported this shocking statistic: The number of youths diagnosed with bipolar disorder is 40 times higher than it was 10 years ago. So it isn’t surprising that some are calling this mood disorder an epidemic.

You might have even seen a Newsweek cover story on this topic in a recent issue. Dramatic evidence that a vitamin powerhouse can help boost mental well-being. Bipolar disorder is classified as a medical illness, and those who suffer from it experience extreme swings in mood, energy and ability to function. While strong prescription drugs are often prescribed to treat this problem, there can be dangerous side effects. And, not everyone can or should take these pharmaceutical medications. That’s why, if you or someone in your life struggles with mood issues, it is vital to work on ways to control stress, remain very active, and get a balanced diet, including appropriate supplements, in particular B-12.

Studies have shown that those who have a B-12 deficiency can experience symptoms caused by decreased mental and nerve functioning.
